My website is moving from wordpress.com to wordpress.org.
I’m told you won’t notice a difference, but I’d like your feedback before I press the big red button.
I’m moving because I’m running out of photo storage space. My son has designed the new site. There are some features the same as new and some that I’ve had to let go of because they are wordpress specific.
What do you think? What do you like about the new site and what do you miss about the old design (if you can remember it)
Is the main difference the photo storage, Sharon? Is the new site as easy to design and modify? I love the simplicity of wordpress, but I have no idea if I am com or org!
This actually brings up a number of questions I’ve had about the fine points of how the WordPress ecosystem works. Right now, your site’s URL ends in dot-wordpress-dot-com. (I’m writing it out so it doesn’t become a clickable link – the WP comment spam filter gets activated by more than two clickable links in a comment.) Does this mean you’re currently on the free plan with WordPress?
When you move to WP-dot-org, are you going to have your own URL, like lifeonalondonplot-dot-com? Right now, I follow you in the WordPress-dot-com reader. I’m pretty sure (but not positive) that the WP reader will be able to transfer your followers smoothly to following you at the new URL, so we’ll continue to see your posts. But if anyone is following you with an RSS reader like Feedly or Bloglovin, I’m not sure if those services will transfer your followers – maybe your son would know the answer to that?
Personally, I’m with wordpress-dot-com, at the lowest paid plan, which is $4 US per month – it’s the cheapest way I’ve found to have a WP blog with my own URL. But it does come with some restrictions, like not being able to install plugins. I’m interested to see how your move from WP-dot-com to dot-org goes, in case I ever want to make the same move myself.
