Garlic too!
I’ve tried onions from seed and they weren’t very successful – maybe half the crop were of a decent cooking size. This year, I’ve gone back to sets – 100 of them. Along with the Solent Wight garlic, I raised them in the polytunnel for about 6 weeks then today planted them out in the bed with the lightest soil and which was last year’s squash bed.

I always grow onions from sets, which I’ll be planting direct on the plot this week. I don’t grow garlic. xx
I have grown my onions from bulb sets…the stems have grown quite large and become green but the onion itself sure is slow to develop. I may have to try growing garlic next year…is there a large difference between garlic from the store and garlic grown by yourself?
Your onions look great – not at all like fainting goats! The bulb will bulk up by end of June/mid July. You could give them a seaweed type feed if you think they need perking up. I honestly notice no difference in taste between store and home-grown garlic – just that it is more plentiful.
