I don’t have space in the home garden for a decent sized herbaceous border, but decided that I could make space for one at the plot. Everything at the plot has to have a purpose, even if that is to simply look lovely and/or make me smile. With that in mind, I’ve been collecting plants that are good for cutting or for foliage.
Cutting and lifting turf the day after a day of heavy rain was hard work but that’s why I don’t have gym membership.
After a few hours work and a cup of tea, the new border looks like this:

I’m going to put in a hidcote lavender hedge at the front of the border. In so far are two hydrangeas, Little Lime and Sabrina and for foliage a physocarpus opulifolius Diabolo D’Or and a Sambucus nigra Black Lace (probably flowers and cordial too) I’ve moved two geums to the new front and added a self seeded verbena bonariensis. Hollyhocks and foxgloves are at the back along with the climbing roses.
I may need to devise a plan to get at the apple cordon, but one thing at a time.

That looks wonderful! I especially love your terracotta edging, so pretty. You must be delighted with it all. And couldn’t agree more about preferring allotment work to the gym!
Thanks. I’m looking forward to watching the border develop
Lovely new border. The apple cordon is looking good, too.
That should look good once it’s all established and grown. xx
You have amazing soil! I love digging a new border, and I agree it is the best exercise. Who would want to go to the gym?
Thanks Ali
